Hair Transplantation: Debunking the Myth That It's Only for Men

Hair thinning and hair loss can affect anyone’s self-esteem and confidence. Although hair transplantation is often associated with male baldness, it is in fact an effective solution for both women and men experiencing hair loss.

Hair loss is not just a male problem

It is a common misconception that hair transplantation is only suitable for men. In reality, hair thinning affects both sexes. On average, a human scalp contains around 100,000 hairs, and it is normal to lose 50–100 hairs per day.

However, hair loss patterns differ. Men typically experience receding hairlines or thinning at the temples and crown. Women, on the other hand, are more likely to notice overall thinning, especially at the crown or back of the head. In both cases, hair transplantation can help restore density and improve appearance.

The DHI method: An effective solution for women and men

One of the most advanced techniques available today is the DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) hair transplant procedure. This method is minimally invasive and performed without a scalpel or tools that could damage the hair follicles.

During the procedure, each follicle is individually transferred from the donor area to the area where hair restoration or increased density is desired. The DHI method is known for being quick, precise, and comfortable for the patient, with graft survival rates reaching up to 90–95%.

This modern technique allows for natural-looking results and a faster recovery compared to traditional methods.

What to know before a hair transplant procedure

For a hair transplant procedure to be successful and free of complications, patients should follow several important guidelines before treatment.

Avoid alcohol, nicotine, certain medications, and intense sun exposure. A special implanter device, approximately 1 mm in diameter, is used during the procedure. Although the scalp is only minimally affected, patients are usually advised to stop certain medications and avoid substances that may increase the risk of bleeding.

Intense sun exposure can also dilate superficial capillaries and raise the risk of bleeding. According to dermatologist-trichologist Dr. A. Audickaitė, it is recommended to avoid sunbathing for at least one to two weeks before the procedure.

Post-transplant care

Proper aftercare is essential for optimal healing and long-lasting results. The scalp usually heals over several weeks, so careful attention during this period is crucial.

In the first few days after the procedure, patients should protect the scalp from bumps, avoid scratching or touching the treated area, and carefully follow their doctor’s instructions for cleansing and care. For about one week, it is also recommended to avoid swimming pools, saunas, and open bodies of water, as well as helmets or tight hats, in order to reduce the risk of infection or irritation.

These precautions help reduce the risk of infection or irritation. Patients are also advised to spray the scalp with a saline solution prescribed by their doctor to support healing.

Long-term care of transplanted hair

After a hair transplant, ongoing hair care becomes especially important. While transplanted hair is permanent, the surrounding non-transplanted hair may still be prone to thinning.

To maintain the best aesthetic results, doctors may recommend topical or oral treatments that help preserve the density of existing hair. This combined approach ensures long-lasting, natural-looking outcomes.

Hair transplantation beyond the scalp

“Hair can also be transplanted to the eyebrow or beard area. In most cases, the hair is taken from the scalp, but over time the transplanted hair adapts to the characteristics of the area where it is placed. For example, although newly transplanted eyebrow hairs may need to be trimmed every two to three weeks at first, their growth rate usually slows down after some time, so frequent trimming is no longer necessary,” says dermatologist Dr. A. Audickaitė.

Hair transplantation is a modern solution that gives both men and women the opportunity to restore fuller hair and regain their confidence. Although it was long believed that the procedure was suitable only for men, today the DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) method effectively helps people of both sexes manage hair thinning. This minimally invasive procedure is associated with high graft survival rates (up to 90–95%) and excellent aesthetic results.
