After otoplasty surgery, results are visible when damaged tissues fully heal and the postoperative scar fades. Ear plastic surgery is most commonly performed under local anesthesia, so the procedure is comfortable and patient recovers quickly. During surgery, surgeon follows the pre-planned ear shape and anatomy, ensuring natural and harmonious ear position.

When and why is otoplasty (protruding ear surgery) performed?
Protruding ears are not only an aesthetic problem; often this becomes a psychological barrier as well – due to this physical characteristic, teasing from others is experienced, complexes develop, and self-confidence is lost. Effectively performed ear plastic surgery changes appearance and restores self-confidence. Therefore, although essentially the main function of this surgery is defined as aesthetic, no less important and significant is the psychological well-being that accompanies a person throughout their remaining life.
It is important to mention that plastic and reconstructive surgeons assess each case individually and select the most appropriate solution.
Preparation for otoplasty surgery
Before surgery, the following are performed:
- general blood tests;
- blood glucose level determination;
- coagulation indicators;
- electrocardiogram.
These tests must be performed no later than 14 days before the procedure.
Smoking, alcohol, and blood-thinning medications can increase bleeding risk and complicate healing. Therefore, after consulting with surgeon, it would be advisable to avoid their use at least 2–4 weeks before surgery.
Protruding ear correction – surgery and its course
For adults, ear plastic surgery is most commonly performed using local anesthesia, so the procedure is comfortable and painless. For children, general anesthesia is usually applied so they are completely calm and feel safe.
Surgery lasts up to one and a half hours. Incision is made behind the ear in a natural crease, through which cartilage is reached. Surgeon models the ear shape and, when necessary, reduces the ear protrusion angle with special sutures secured to the tissues behind the ear. After completing correction, skin is sutured with fine, aesthetically healing sutures.
Ear surgery for children is usually performed from approximately 7 years of age, however, this surgery is actually more perceived and accepted as an aesthetic surgery. Because of this, it is very important that the child themselves understands and wants such procedure to be performed on them.
Otoplasty surgery recovery
If surgery is performed using local anesthesia, patient can go home the same day. When performing the procedure under general anesthesia, patient is usually observed in the clinic for one night.
In the first days, mild swelling, pulling sensation, or slight pain may occur, which is relieved by prescribed medications.
After surgery, ears are wrapped with elastic bandage, which is usually worn for 5–7 days. While bandage is in place, it is important not to wet it. Later, it is advisable to wear elastic headband at night for about 2 weeks so ears maintain proper position.
Additionally, practice shows that most effective results are achieved when:
- elastic headband is worn at night for 2 weeks after surgery;
- sleeping on back with head elevated;
- direct sun rays are avoided and swimming in water bodies is avoided for at least 4-6 weeks until wounds fully heal;
- return to active physical activity no earlier than after 4–6 weeks;
- head covering is worn during cold season.
After otoplasty surgery, any activities that could mechanically damage ears should be avoided. Patient is provided with individual postoperative care guidelines, adherence to which ensures smooth healing and good result.
