What is PRP treatment for hair?

PRP treatment for hair is a minimally invasive method that uses the body's own natural resources. The procedure is straightforward: a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient's vein and placed in a centrifuge. During centrifugation, the blood separates into layers, and the most valuable component – plasma with a high platelet concentration – is separated for further use. Normally, one millilitre of blood contains approximately 200,000 platelets, while PRP concentrate may contain a platelet concentration 3-7 times higher than that found in regular blood.

The extracted concentrate is injected into the scalp with a fine needle, where growth factors stimulate hair follicle activity and may contribute to strengthening hair and improving scalp condition. The procedure takes between 30 and 60 minutes.

Who is PRP treatment for hair suitable for?

PRP for hair may be suitable in various hair loss cases. The most common indications are:

  • Diffuse hair loss – common in both women and men, where hair thins evenly across the entire scalp area.
  • Androgenetic alopecia in early stages – PRP may help slow hair loss and strengthen the structure of existing hair.
  • Thinning hair and reduced density – where hair has lost its previous density due to stress, hormonal changes, or seasonal factors.
  • Rehabilitation after hair transplantation – PRP helps accelerate the engraftment of transplanted follicles and new hair growth.
  • Improving scalp condition – the procedure stimulates scalp microcirculation and contributes to a healthier follicle environment.

Prior to the procedure, a trichologist consultation is carried out, during which the individual situation is assessed.

What does the PRP procedure look like?

Before the procedure:

At least 24 hours before the procedure, it is recommended to avoid alcohol. Adequate fluid intake is important. After consulting with the doctor, it may be worth temporarily avoiding blood-thinning medications.

During the procedure:

A small amount of blood is drawn from a vein and centrifuged. The resulting platelet-rich plasma is injected into the scalp with a fine needle. The injections may cause mild to moderate discomfort, which can be minimized by the use of local anesthetic. While generally well tolerated, some patients may experience a stinging or pressure sensation. The entire procedure takes approximately 30–60 minutes.

After the procedure:

A return to daily activities is possible immediately. For a few hours, the scalp may be sensitive or slightly red at the injection site. The first changes may be noticeable after a few weeks and become more visible over time.

PRP treatment for the face

In addition to the scalp, PRP therapy is also successfully used for facial skin rejuvenation. PRP treatment for the face stimulates collagen and elastin production, improving skin texture, tone, and elasticity. This procedure is particularly valued for its natural approach – exclusively the patient's own biological material is used, meaning the risk of allergic reactions is minimal.

Is PRP treatment for hair painful?

The procedure is not considered painful. Before the injections, the scalp may be numbed with a local anaesthetic. While some minor discomfort in certain areas is possible, it is generally well tolerated and passes quickly.

How many PRP treatments are needed for hair loss?

A course of 3–6 procedures with 4–6 week intervals is most commonly planned. The exact number of procedures depends on the individual patient's situation and scalp condition. Maintenance procedures may later be carried out every 6–12 months.

Does PRP stop hair loss?

PRP therapy may slow hair loss and strengthen existing hair. However, results depend on the cause and stage of hair loss. A more noticeable effect is more commonly observed in the early stages of hair thinning.

When are PRP results visible?

The first changes may be noticeable as early as 2–4 weeks after the procedure. However, a clearer effect – strengthened existing hair, reduced shedding, new hair growth – most commonly becomes apparent after several procedures, 2–3 months after the start of the course.

Can PRP be combined with other hair treatments?

Yes, PRP is often combined with other hair loss treatment methods. One of the most popular combinations is PRP together with mesotherapy for hair, where the scalp is additionally supplied with vitamins, amino acids, and peptides. PRP may also be applied before and after hair transplantation to improve follicle engraftment. The treatment plan and combination of procedures is determined by the doctor after assessing the individual patient's situation during a trichologist consultation.
