When is dermatologist consultation needed?
Dermatologist consultation is performed when unusual skin changes are noticed – rashes, itching, redness, peeling, or slowly healing wounds. Most common reasons patients seek consultation:
- Pigmentation changes – appeared or changed pigmented spots, uneven skin color.
- Skin aging signs – wrinkles, skin sagging, dryness.
- Skin lesions – moles, warts, papillomas, or other formations that are evaluated as changed or symptomatic skin lesions.
- Inflammatory process – acne, rosacea, dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis.
- Skin texture changes – roughness, scaling, pore enlargement.
- Hair and nail problems – intensive hair loss, nail color or shape changes.
Dermatologist consultation is also performed when planning aesthetic procedures such as botulinum injections, mesotherapy, or biorevitalization. Specialist evaluates skin condition and helps determine which procedures would be most suitable.
How does dermatologist consultation proceed?
During initial consultation, dermatologist listens to patient's complaints, inquires about symptom progression, medications taken, dietary supplements, and skin care products used. Information about family skin disease history may also be important.
After conversation, physical skin examination is performed. If needed, doctor uses dermatoscope – special device allowing magnification and illumination of skin lesions, evaluation of their structure, and determination of whether lesion is benign. Dermatoscopy is especially important when evaluating moles and other pigmented lesions.
Doctor provides diagnosis or prescribes additional tests (blood tests, skin biopsy, fungal culture) if condition needs clarification. Individual treatment plan is also created, or possible procedures are discussed – mole removal, wart removal, papilloma removal, acne treatment, or others.
Dermatologist consultation for children
Children's skin is more sensitive and reacts differently than adults', so some skin problems require special attention. Dermatologist consultation for children is relevant for atopic dermatitis, eczema, infectious rash cases, and also for evaluating congenital moles or other skin lesions.
When preparing for visit with child, it can be useful to photograph rashes or skin changes, have information about care products used and medications taken. Children under 16 years attend consultation with accompanying adult.
