What is laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis. The laser light is absorbed by melanin — the pigment found in the hair roots. This energy converts to heat, which damages the follicle structure and disrupts its activity. The cell layers surrounding the hair and responsible for its growth are thermally destroyed in the process.
Alexandrite laser
The Alexandrite laser used at InSense Clinic emits light at a wavelength of 755 nm — an optimal frequency for effective removal of darker hair on lighter skin.
This laser type is particularly precise in targeting melanin: the energy concentrates in the hair rather than the surrounding skin, making the procedure safe and unlikely to cause significant skin sensitivity. It works best on medium to coarse, darker hair.
Which areas of the body are suitable for laser hair removal?
Laser hair removal can be performed on both men and women across almost any area where unwanted hair grows.
Areas commonly chosen by women:
- Face: upper lip, chin, cheek area.
- Body: underarms, arms, back, chest.
- Leg laser hair removal: thighs, lower legs, knees.
- Bikini laser hair removal: standard bikini line, deeper bikini area.
Men most commonly choose hair removal from the shoulders, underarms, back, chest, and abdomen.
A large-scale study involving 948 patients found that 90% of participants achieved 75% or greater hair reduction in the underarm area, 82% in the bikini zone, and 79% on the legs after three sessions.
How the procedure works
Before the procedure
A consultation with a qualified specialist (e.g., dermatologist or aesthetician) is essential prior to the visit, during which the specialist will assess skin and hair type and determine suitability for the procedure.
For four weeks before the procedure, hair should not be removed using wax, sugar, an electric epilator, or tweezers — the roots need to remain in place. Shaving is the only method suitable during this time. Tanning beds and prolonged sun exposure are also worth avoiding.
On the day of the procedure, the treatment area should be shaved, leaving about 1–2 mm of hair length. Perfumed creams, deodorants, or other cosmetic products on the treatment area are best avoided.
During the procedure
Both the patient and the doctor wear protective eyewear. The procedure may cause mild discomfort, particularly in more sensitive areas such as the bikini zone, underarms, and face. Topical anaesthetic cream or drops can be used to reduce this if needed.
After the procedure
The treated area should not be subjected to any irritation for at least 24 hours after the procedure. Any scabbing that forms should be left alone — avoid touching, picking, or exposing the area to physical irritants such as saunas or UV light.
Applying a broad-spectrum sun cream (SPF 30 or higher) to the treated area for at least four weeks after the procedure is advisable.
Number of sessions and intervals
Depending on the size of the area and hair density, 5–8 or more sessions are typically needed. A higher number of sessions increases the likelihood of targeting hair during its active growth (anagen) phase. Intervals between sessions are generally 4 to 8 weeks.
The effectiveness of the procedure depends primarily on hair colour, thickness, and depth, as well as hormonal levels and genetic predisposition. To maintain results over time, a top-up session once or twice a year is worth considering.
Is laser hair removal painful?
The level of discomfort depends on the sensitivity of the area. The laser at InSense Clinic includes an additional cooling system, which helps reduce discomfort during treatment.
When is laser hair removal not suitable?
The procedure is not suitable in the presence of active skin inflammation, open wounds, or infection in the treatment area.
Can laser remove grey hair?
Grey hair contains no melanin, so laser energy will not affect it. Laser hair removal works most effectively on dark hair on lighter skin.
Does hair grow back after laser hair removal?
After a full course of treatments, most individuals experience a significant and long-lasting reduction in hair growth. While many hairs may not regrow, some may return finer and lighter. Hormonal changes or certain medications can, however, reactivate dormant hair follicles, potentially leading to new hair growth.
Can laser hair removal be performed during pregnancy?
Laser hair removal is generally not performed during pregnancy, even though no evidence of harm to the baby has been established. This is a precautionary measure, particularly during the first trimester. Pregnancy affects hormonal balance and hair growth cycles, which may also reduce the effectiveness of the procedure.
