What is IPL therapy?
IPL is broad-spectrum light covering multiple wavelengths. Unlike laser, which uses one specific wavelength, IPL emits several wavelengths simultaneously. This allows affecting different skin components during single procedure: pigment (melanin), blood vessels, and collagen fibers.
During procedure, broad-spectrum light pulses are directed to problematic skin area. Light energy converts to heat, which selectively affects target tissues, though surrounding tissue reactions are possible (for example, redness or pigmentation changes).
Who is IPL therapy for?
IPL procedure is suitable for men and women wanting to solve various skin problems:
- Pigmentation spot removal (sun, age, freckles).
- Dilated capillary removal.
- Skin redness removal.
- Rosacea (rosacea) sign correction (most commonly applied to reduce facial redness and dilated blood vessels).
- Acne treatment.
- Skin texture and tone evening.
- Fine wrinkle reduction and skin firmness improvement.
Before procedure, dermatologist doctor evaluates skin condition, discusses expectations, and selects suitable treatment plan.
IPL procedure
Before procedure, for 2–4 weeks, it is worth avoiding intensive sun exposure, tanning bed, and self-tanning products. Also, use of preparations increasing skin light sensitivity (retinoids, acids) is temporarily stopped – more specific guidelines are provided by doctor during consultation.
During procedure, doctor applies cooling gel and directs IPL device tip to treated area. Light pulses cause short-term heat or light tingling sensation. Single session duration is from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on treated zone size.
After procedure, skin can redden, be more sensitive – this is normal reaction that usually passes within 24–48 hours. Pigmentation spots can temporarily darken before beginning to disappear. For 4–8 weeks, it is important to protect skin from UV rays and use SPF 50 protection. Also, for few days after procedure, it is important to avoid sauna, pool, and intensive physical activity.
Is IPL therapy safe?
IPL therapy is considered safe procedure. Possible temporary side effects: redness, slight swelling, sensitivity sensation. In rare cases, temporary pigmentation changes can appear, especially for darker skin types.
How many sessions are needed for IPL therapy?
To achieve desired result, most commonly 3–6 procedure course is performed, repeating sessions every 3–6 weeks. Precise procedure number is determined by doctor, considering skin condition and problem being solved.
Is IPL therapy painful?
Procedure is usually tolerated, but can cause short-term tingling or burning sensation. Many patients feel short-term heat or light "rubber band snap" sensation. IPL technology used at "InSense Clinic" with integrated cooling system (-12°C) reduces discomfort.
How does IPL differ from laser procedure?
IPL uses broad-spectrum light with multiple wavelengths, while laser uses one precise wavelength. IPL is more universal: single procedure can affect both pigmentation and blood vessels and stimulate collagen production. Laser is more precise for specific problems. IPL usually requires more sessions, but procedure is gentler, and recovery period is shorter.
When is IPL procedure not performed?
IPL procedure is not performed: during pregnancy and breastfeeding period; with fresh skin tan (2–4 weeks); with active skin infection or malignant skin diseases in treated zone; if skin tends toward keloid scars; with increased body light sensitivity due to diseases or medications taken; when taking photosensitizing preparations. During dermatologist consultation doctor evaluates individual situation and determines whether procedure is suitable for specific patient.
